Invitation to a Staycation Picnic

Usually, these are four separate features.

  • One for a simple recipe.

  • One for a comforting ritual.

  • One for an easy art idea.

  • One for a little poem to close the issue.

But August has always felt different. It's the month of slowing down, wandering a little longer, and lingering over simple pleasures. So this time, I decided to gather everything into one relaxed afternoon.

Think of it as unpacking a picnic basket.

Inside you'll find something to sip, something to nibble, something to create, and something to carry home with you. There isn't a schedule. There isn't a right order. Pour yourself something bubbly. Find a shady spot. Kick off your shoes. And stay a while.

Welcome to your staycation.

Relax. You're here. Welcome to your August Staycation.

A Staycation Sparkling Water

Sometimes the fanciest drink is the easiest one to make.

Pour one can of lime sparkling water and one can of raspberry sparkling water over a pitcher full of ice. Add a few slices of lemon or lime if you have them, stir gently, and pour into your favorite glass.

Then don't rush.

Notice the bubbles.

Notice the citrus.

Notice how something so simple can feel like a little celebration.

Build a Staycation Snack Box

I love making what I jokingly call a tackle box of snacks.

Not because I'm going fishing...

Because I like wandering.

Fill a tray or divided container with little bites of things you already enjoy.

Apple slices.

Cheddar or gouda.

Crackers.

Mixed nuts.

Olives.

Blueberries.

Dried fruit.

A little jerky or hard salami.

Maybe even a square of dark chocolate tucked into the corner.

Nothing fancy.

Just enough little tastes that you can linger instead of rushing through a meal.

Picnics don't have to be elaborate.

Sometimes they simply need to happen.

Easy Garden Focaccia

If you're spending a slow afternoon at home, focaccia is one of the simplest breads to make.

Press cherry tomatoes, thin onion slices, fresh herbs, and a few olives into the dough. Drizzle generously with olive oil, sprinkle with flaky salt, and bake until golden.

Serve it with a quick dip made by stirring together plain Greek yogurt, grated garlic, a squeeze of lime, a drizzle of olive oil, and a pinch of salt.

Tuck a few slices into your picnic basket and head outside.

Staycation Art

You don't need a studio.

You need curiosity.

Pack a small watercolor set, a notebook, a cup of water, and a few brushes.

Or skip the brushes entirely.

Try painting with a blade of marsh grass.

A pine needle.

A feather.

A little twig.

Forget perfection.

Paint the feeling of the afternoon instead of the details.

Then, once the page is dry, add a few pencil sketches, doodles, or handwritten thoughts around the painting.

Your journal doesn't need to become a masterpiece.

It only needs to become yours.

Gentle Art Prompts

  • Paint the colors of the water without painting the shoreline.

  • Collect five natural shapes and turn them into abstract patterns.

  • Sketch a shell without lifting your pencil.

  • Paint the shadows instead of the objects.

  • Draw the wind.

Staycation

Every day arrives only once.

This afternoon has never existed before.

It never will again.

So why should vacation belong only to places far away?

Bring a folding chair.

Bring a towel.

Forget your shoes.

Let the bubbles rise.

Laugh with the birds.

Laugh with the waves.

Laugh with the wind.

You're here.

Right here.

Right now.

There is nowhere else to be.

Aloha.
