Keeping Cool on a Hot Day: Vintage Vest, Striped Shorts, and the Art of Carrying What You Love

We carry a lot through our lives.

Some of it is visible.

Some of it isn't.

On a hot day, you become especially aware of the things you're carrying that you don't love. The extra weight. The expectations. The unfinished projects. The worries that seem determined to come along for the ride.

Why not carry what you do love, forward?

In the closet, because it's ninety degrees outside, the humidity is making negotiations on your behalf, you reach for the things that still feel like you—but lighter. Cooler.

This was one of those outfits.

A simple black 80s/90s vest. Black-and-white striped shorts. Ballet flats. A favorite red "treat yourself" lipstick.

The vest itself feels very late 1980s into early 1990s to me—easier times in some ways. Not in others.

It could have been simpler.

So that's its story.

Keep it simple.

The striped shorts add a little graphic energy. Ballet flats make the whole thing practical enough for bookstore wandering, antique browsing, coffee runs, or an afternoon spent poking around a garden center looking for plants you absolutely did not intend to buy.

Or today, vintage shop girl chic.

The finishing touch is a black bowler bag with red piping that I've carried since the 1990s, rescued from a discount bin destined to be forgotten.

I love it.

I can't tell you the brand anymore.

I couldn't tell you what store it came from.

But I can tell you it has survived decades of trends, several versions of myself, and countless closet cleanouts.

That's the thing about certain accessories.

They stop being purchases and become companions.

The red piping on the bag quietly echoes the red lipstick. The silver jewelry adds a little shine. My phoenix necklace finds its place among the layers.

Nothing matches exactly.

Everything belongs together.

That's usually my favorite kind of style.

I've realized over time that I don't really have a signature vintage aesthetic.

I'm not exclusively boho.

I'm not strictly mod.

I'm not committed to one decade.

What I love are pieces with personalities.

Artifacts.

Things that seem to carry conversations from another place and another time.

The vest is one of those pieces.

The bowler bag is another.

Put them together on a hot summer day and they become less about fashion and more about memory.

Not costume.

Not nostalgia.

Just a reminder that sometimes the coolest thing you can wear is a collection of things you've loved long enough to know why they're still with you.

Some people build outfits.

I seem to build relationships with objects and then invite them to travel through life with me.

So here it is. 90s retro chic, a little rock and roll under the radar cool vibe. Completely coffee shop me.
