Chronicles of Xude: Observation #917 — The Vanishing Penny
Researchers have uncovered a curious economic ritual.
Humans often insist that exact accounting is essential. They audit. They reconcile. They debate taxes to multiple decimal places.
Yet many transactions conclude with the phrase:
"Keep the penny."
In some regions, researchers have observed the penny itself disappearing entirely. Purchases are rounded. The smallest unit of value is quietly declared inconvenient. And they round DOWN. Not up in favor of the consumer. The retailer is doing this. A small robbery I think!
This raises several questions.
If one penny is insignificant, at what quantity does it become significant?
One million insignificant pennies appears to acquire remarkable significance.
Researchers are attempting to determine whether humans have discovered a new law of mathematics in which enough negligible losses eventually become noticeable only to someone else.
Preliminary findings suggest this principle may extend well beyond currency.
